Somaén, pleasure and comfort of returning to life in the villages

With the arrival of the crisis and the lack of jobs in the big cities, not few Spaniards who are seriously considering the possibility of emigrating. Although on this occasion just to the contrary that when they did several decades ago, already were they or their ancestors: from the city to the village. There’s even an advertisement on television that promotes the “adoption” of inhabitants of the cities of the people, remember him?

One of the drawbacks (or an advantage, as you look at it) peoples is its lack of infrastructure, the ruin of many of their homes and the lack of services such as, for example, Internet connection. Some of these shortcomings already are being solved by technology with satellite connections, improvement of roads of access or implementation of basic services such as health and education. Today we bring you an example of what can be done to solve another problem: the deteriorated state of their homes.

Somaén village, in the province of Soria, belongs to the village of Arcos de Jalón and from two decades is experiencing a true rebirth of hand rehabilitation. It all began with the restoration of its Moorish Castle from the 11th century, and gradually, the hand of the architect Manuel de la Torre, the whole village has changed totally in aspect.

Like so many other towns in the interior of the peninsula, Somaén with 450 inhabitants at the end of the 19th century, was depopulated with strong emigration to Madrid, Barcelona and Zaragoza. Just a couple of decades, the village just had 20 elderly inhabitants installed at the bottom, leaving the top, next to the Castle, fully depopulated.

It was then when the architect Manuel de la Torre, general director of the company consolidations and procurement, directed the complete rehabilitation of the Castle adapted to the new times with modern installations, plumbing and heating circuit. Later followed the reformation of an old House of income that is now the Hotel la Posada Real de Santa Quiteria, and from there, friends of the owners of the Castle commissioned the rehabilitation of existing houses and the construction of new ones, getting build soon a renewed village on the outskirts of the Castle.

30 Homes of this project are mostly second homes and respond to a pattern of single-family house of 160 to 300 square meters built a spacious living room with kitchen, two and three bedroom, two and three bathrooms, porch and garden. These houses, always respecting the original environment, have large Windows, floor and wall heating and the recovery of ancient pieces such as forging, beams of wood doors, tile Arabic, clay pavers…

Then the streets are paved, gardens were created and are soterraron all networks of electricity, telephone, public lighting, plumbing and sanitation network. There are still many dwellings by rehabilitating and empty plots. Even you can buy one of these single family, key in hand, by 1,400 euros square meter.

Moment, and the photos they attest, the village has regained life and beauty that took almost a century ago. We are sure that there are hundreds of villages scattered across Spain subject to comprehensive reform like this. Leave the cities and return to more natural life of peoples begins to be feasible.
